Congalsa reinforces its commitment to sustainable fishing in collaboration with SFP
Congalsa is commited to promote a sustainable fishing model. We want to protect marine resources from depletion and, therefore, we actively participate in those forums that defend a model that allows current and future generations to continue enjoying seafood.
Sustainable squid fishing, progress and future challenges
The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) round table on June 23 served to analyze the global situation of the main squid species and the action plans carried out to promote improvements in the management of these fisheries.
Congalsa was the only Spanish company participating, indicative of our concern for sustainable fishing.
This forum is especially useful for sharing information, and the possibility of learning about the project evolution. In this work session, aspects focused on the capture of giant squid should be highlighted as followed:
-
Increasing importance of sustainable fishing
The concern to guarantee sustainable methods has grown in the past few years and has had an impact in the catches. If in 2017 the squid fisheries that applied sustainability plans did not reach 1%, today they are already approximately 14%. The expected trend in the short term, is to continue growing until becoming the standard in the sector.
-
Creation of regional and sectoral associations
The creation of national and sectoral associations is another aspect that was discussed at the meeting. Calamasur was born as an association that brings together the main companies in the giant squid sector in Mexico, Peru, Chile and Ecuador. The objective is to guarantee the sustainability of fishing in the medium and long term, enhancing the natural regeneration of marine resources. This is not incompatible with Chile and Peru carrying out their own projects.
-
Biological stops
The generalization of biological stops is gradually making its way and they are already reaching high-distance fleets. This is the main meausre to stop marine resources depletion and to allow them to regenerate. Chinese fleets are going to make a biological stop this year, both in Argentina and in the Pacific Ocean.
Conclusion
Sustainability policies are the future, which is why SFP's work and our commitment to collaboration occupy a place of reference in our social responsibility policies. At Congalsa, we will keep trying to contribute to sustainability by offering quality and sustainable products.
